Details on what is needed:
In 2023, MCP has admitted more scholars with special needs and mental health needs. As a result, MCP’s needs and related expense for more special education staff and mental health professionals to work with these scholars has increased by more than 35%.
This school year (2023-24), MCP has added a Mental Health Therapist (MHT) on each school’s roster. Having an MHT on each campus allows us to work with more scholars and in deeper ways. Our campus-based therapists work with our scholars and their families to provide highly skilled psychological casework services, counseling, and treatment for identified students in the school setting. These therapists also provide consultation services to the school staff to support the overall mental health goals of the school within MCP’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
Through campus-integrated MHTs, MCP can further facilitate the development of student character and wellbeing through MCP’s framework to ensure a positive and focused environment that creates the conditions for positive learning.
The purpose for campus-based Mental Health Therapists includes:
The recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores laid bare the devastating academic setbacks in both math and reading and the growing inequities in education caused by the pandemic. Accelerating learning is critical as we move forward. But we know that it's impossible for scholars to reach their fullest academic potential if we have not first met their social emotional needs. The anxiety, depression, and trauma we are seeing have grown proportionally to the drop in achievement.
With all scholars back at school for in-person instruction and fewer covid-related disruptions, we are seeing the full impact both this pandemic and the simultaneous racial reckoning has had on them. The time spent away from school was isolating at best and dangerous at worst. The trauma that is evident is being met inside our schools with robust SEL and trauma-informed programming that was established after the pandemic. This programming continues to be needed at Milwaukee College Prep so that we can continue to provide the uncompromising education in order to close the indefensible achievement gap in our city. Please help Milwaukee College Prep to support the emotional needs and mental health of our scholars by making a donation to support and grow this program.
